From its beginning as a mission church, HPUMC has been actively involved in mission activities. We actively support the denomination's mission agencies, especially the work of the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Regular mission moments in worship keep congregants up-to-date on the team's work.
The church sponsors Steve and Stephanie Bredesen, our missionaries in Africa. We also send persons on mission trips. This year, we've sent persons to Bolivia, the Philippines and Nicaragua.
Our most recent endeavor is a relationship with Highland Park Elementary School. At Christmas 2011, we sponsored our first ever "Christmas Store," in partnership with Project Noel of our annual conference. We regularly collect Box Tops for Education and donate them to the school. A collection envelope can be found on the narthex bulletin board. A dinner at the end of the school year was held on school grounds for the teachers.
Local mission projects are very important to our work. We serve dinner at Love Feast every 5th Tuesday. Love Feast is held at the south campus of First UMC. We also support the ministry of the OSU Wesley Foundation. Each fall, we collect food as part of the Harvest II food drive, coordinated by the Junior Service League of Stillwater.
In November, we sponsor "Blanket Sundays," a ministry of Church World Service. In 2012, we purchased 343 of these $5 blankets. We also participate in all six of the special Sunday offerings of the United Methodist Church.
One of our most exciting local partnerships is with Lincoln Academy, Stillwater's alternative school. We collect new and gently used prom dresses for students who do not have them. Each year, the United Methodist Women host Lincoln students for the annual “Craft Day” and brunch. Various people in the church offer a craft for the students to make and share with their families, since many of them do not have the resources to purchase Christmas gifts. After a morning of crafts, the students are treated to a wonderful brunch.
